The Cooperative commenced its activity
in 1926; its founders were members of the Towarzystwo Organizacji
Kółek Rolniczych (the Organisation Society of the Circle of
Farmers). The first seat of the company was in the cellars
of the simple wooden building of the cooperative savings bank,
located at the crossroads of Warszawska and Szkolna Streets.
In those days, the cooperative bought 120 litres of milk per
day and made butter from it. They also ran a dairy shop in
Dęblin. Among the people who built the foundations of this
business in Ryki were Pruchnicki, Bronisław Warowny, Henryk
Skopupko, Antoni Kozak and Andrzej Filipek. And in the years1934-37
there must have been more of such dedicated people as they
erected, with their own money and effort, a production plant
whose processing capacity was 1200 litres/day.
Under
the German occupation during the Second World War, the firm
was kept in operation for a long time by Janusz Wierusz Kowalski,
the director. The building was bombed, however, and its roof
was destroyed, and it was not until 1948 that it was restored
to its former splendour thanks to Mr. Aleksander Rusa. From
1 July 1948 the Cooperative was purchasing eggs and poultry
while the daily purchase of milk amounted to 100 litres at
the beginning and 500 litres at the end of 1948. The territorial
scope of the Cooperative’s activity began to expand quickly.
Initially, milk was brought to the dairy in a Russian gazik
military car and a second-hand Chevrolet. Thanks to the profits
on the poultry and egg trade, the purchase of the cars was
quickly amortised and debts could be repaid. In 1950 as much
as 2 million litres of milk were purchased. In the fifties,
the plant was nationalised. The Powiatowy Zakład Mleczarski
w Garwolinie Oddział w Rykach (the District Dairy Enterprise
in Garwolin, Branch in Ryki) was called into being. Obligatory
milk supplies were introduced. Further transformations in
1954 led to the establishment of the Independent Dairy Enterprise
in Ryki in which butter, cottage cheese and maturing cheeses
(the so-called yellow cheese) were produced. In 1957 the Dairy
Cooperative was reinstated and it experienced considerable
development. Milk purchase was continually on the rise: in
1959 it exceeded 10 million litres and in 1965 reached the
amount of 12 million litres. However, the processing capacity
turned out to be insufficient in the face of the intensive
increase of milk supplies. Expansion of the enterprise was
considered. Gończyce and Żelechów were striving to win a similar
investment too. The location in Ryki was initially on a different
site to its current location in Żytnia Street.
In
1967 the purchase of milk amounted to 15 million litres and
in 1971 it reached 17 million. Under these conditions, the
building of a new plant was a must. In June 1972 a new modern
dairy plant was put into operation. It cost 60 million zloties
and its target production capacity was 100 thousand litres
per day. Now it was possible to handle all the purchased milk
properly. Jan Głodek was the president of OSM Ryki until 1
February 1974. He was succeeded by Stanisław Błachnio, Stanisław
Szopa and Mirosław Lusztyk. In 1974-75 the casein plant and
a purchasing centre were added. On 2 November 1982 eng. Tadeusz
Polański became the president of the enterprise and Tadeusz
Łabędzki and Jerzy Pyza, M.Sc. were the vice-presidents. In
1986 the technical warehouse was created and in 1995 the cheese
plant became operational - it is entirely automated. At present
it is mainly various kinds of maturing cheese that are produced.
In
1996 the purchase of milk amounted to 43 million litres; 180,000
litres per day at peak periods. In 1997/98 a modern quality
control laboratory was put into operation. The laboratory
also carries out tests for other dairies for a fee. The expanding
cooperative moved its trade division and food warehouse to
a new location in the so-called trading area, located in Fabryczna
Street (with several other warehouses such as Eldorado and
the Hortex production plant nearby).
In
1998 49.5 million litres of milk were purchased. The Dairy
Company in Ryki was developing dynamically and held a leading
position among the best dairy companies in Poland. Moreover,
in the same year, a new system of cheese salting was introduced
and substituted the old system.
In
February 1999 a new production line for whey thickening (based
on the reverse osmosis principle) became operational.
Although
we have achieved a lot, the Dairy Cooperative in Ryki wants
to continue developing and attracting even more consumers.
